HI and welcome back to another episode of The Financially Free Woman podcast!

If you’re new here, I want to welcome you.

I’m Sharon, a Mindful Money Coach and I help working moms stop feeling scared & anxious about money to become financially confident, courageous & calm.

When I started the podcast, my objective was to encourage people going through difficult financial times because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you’re currently in a place where you don’t want to be financially, then I hope this episode serves as an encouragement and reminder, plus gives you practical steps to take to improve your situation.

Maybe you had some goals and ideas of how your life was supposed to turn out by now and it’s still not happening.

I want to remind you that the real purpose of goals are to give your life purpose and direction.

If you’re working in a corporate job, I know this isn't what you’ve been told.

Heck, when I teach goal setting in my corporate job, this isn’t even what I’m supposed to say.

Targets, KPIs, goals are meant to be achieved. And if you don’t, you’re labeled a non-performer.

That may be fine in the corporate world, but the rules in the game of life are different.

The real purpose of goals are as what Bruce Lee said, and I quote:

“A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.”

~ Bruce Lee

It’s about the person you become.

I want to give you some perspective on this in case you’re saying, ‘yeah, but Sharon, you don’t understand my situation. I have kids to feed and put through school. I have a mortgage to pay. Elderly parents to take care of.’

I get it, I’m a full-time working, breadwinning mom myself, so I know, the pressure is real.

But I wanna share something my son asked me last night after we finally got to the end of the series ‘Lucifer’ on Netflix.

I don’t want to spoil it for you if you’re halfway through the series or intend to watch it.

Like all good shows, (I loved Lucifer by the way), there are usually some questions left unanswered at the end. So I was having a discussion with my son about the interpretation of the end.

And he just asked me this question,

‘Mommy, do you know how old the Universe is?’

I’m like, ‘I don’t know, a few billion years old?’

And he says, ‘yeah, 13.8 billion years old.’

By the way, my son is 16 and he knows this because he’s really been into astronomy and astrophotography lately so all things Universe, ancient civilisation and all that stuff is his world right now.

And he goes on and asks me, ‘Do you remember what it was like from the beginning of the Universe up until where you are now?’

And I say, ‘well, I don’t know, I’m not conscious of it, so I guess no, I don’t remember what it was like from the beginning of the Universe until where I am now.’

To be honest, I even have trouble remembering what I had for lunch….but that’s another story.

Next, my son says, ‘Yeah, that’s my point. What if it’s going to be like that after you die?’

And I’m like, ‘Oh, so like our time here on Earth is just a little blip in eternity.’

And he says, ‘Yes’.

We are free thinkers, so we don’t practice any particular religion.

But I’d say we’re pretty spiritual, and with the advances in technology, astronomy, quantum physics and the whole mindfulness and spirituality movement these days, we’re becoming more aware of and having more evidence to prove that there really is more to life than just our time on Earth.

Time itself is just an idea anyway, an idea that can lead to more questions than just the number that shows up on your phone when you check the time.

But let me bring it back to the here and now and the pressures and reality of what we’re facing in daily living.

Whatever you’re going through right now, that you wish would be different, goals that you wished you had reached already, or wanting your physical reality to be different, you can continue to fight it, to wish it were different, to feel pity for yourself, or demotivated and discouraged.

And it’s totally normal to feel like that, we’re human after all. Give yourself the time to feel sorry for yourself and grief about it.

But just for a little bit.

Because I want to remind you that this is just a blip in your life that may seem like such a long time. Your entire life is just a blip in the eternal continuum of time.

A better attitude to take is to know that whatever you’re going through now, is exactly what you have to go through to experience your life fully.

Because, the fact is, whatever you’re going through now is already here. You’re going through it right now.

You can therefore choose to stop fighting it.

When you decide to stop fighting it, then you can make the most of every moment and everything that’s happening in your life right now.

Because ultimately, happiness is a choice, not a circumstance. It’s a daily choice you make every morning when you wake up.

It will never be that you’ll be happy when...you make that extra money, or reach that amount of savings in your bank, or get that perfect job or build that business you’ve always dreamed of.

That’s not going to happen, if you don’t change the way you think and feel about right now, with all the good, the bad and the ugly.

Just because you earn a little more money, hit that savings goal, pay off that debt, get that dream job or dream business, it’s not going to be without the good, the bad and the ugly. Those are still going to be there. And if you choose to focus on the bad and the ugly, your life will forever never be good enough. And you’ll always feel like you’re falling short of your goal, which spoiler alert, everyone’s ultimate goal is to be happy.

So this, whatever you’re going through right now, is your training ground to start learning how to be grateful and appreciative of everything that you have right here, right now.

And that’s why I realised that it’s the same with financial freedom. Or any kind of freedom - whether it’s freedom of your time, your mind, in terms of wanting peace of mind and to stop worrying or feeling anxious and scared.

Any kind of freedom you’re looking for begins with you, in your mind. You can decide that no matter what happens today, you will be happy and grateful.

I know that you know this intellectually. You’ve heard this before. But knowing something in your head, rationally and intellectually, is very different from knowing it in your being, in your soul and living it out in your day-to-day life.

It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity of the media, of your family and friends, your workplace, school or environment. Remember, they play by a different set of rules. So I wanted to remind you of that today.

Here are some practical steps you can take to shift your mindset and perspective about what you’re going through right now:

  • Flip your script.

Flip everything you’re thinking and saying about your current situation to an opposite or different and more positive scenario.

For example, maybe you’re saying you still aren’t making the kind of money you want despite doing your best at work or investing in courses to learn how to be successful at what you do.

Flip the script to, ‘The results I’m experiencing right now are exactly what I need to have because they’re helping me learn and grow in this path I’ve chosen.’

  • List 3 things you’re grateful for and why.

I’m going to challenge you to pick one thing that’s good that you’re grateful for, one thing that’s bad and find what you can be grateful for, and one thing that’s ugly and stretch yourself to find what it is about it that you can be grateful for.

  • List qualities and characteristics of the kind of person you want to be.

Think about what kind of person you want to be. What qualities would this person have? Now, look at how your current situation can help you develop and practice those qualities and characteristics of this person you want to be. Then just focus on doing ONE small thing today that this kind of person would do.

By taking these 3 steps and making it part of your daily practice and ritual, you’re now being that person you said you want to be.

Remember this isn’t a sprint, it’s a process of evolution and the unfolding of each moment of your life and how you respond to each of these moments is an opportunity for you to evolve into this person.

If you just do ONE thing today, you would have achieved 365 little goals in one year that direct your life towards the person you said you want to be.

I hope you enjoyed this episode and don’t forget to share this with someone you care about and who you think might benefit from hearing this.
